Outlander meets Game of Thrones.

This book goes straight into the category of books I was magnetically pulled towards. If you grow up in the 90s like me (hi!!), then you know we grow up on portal fantasies (think Narnia, think Never Ending Story) and ever since then, portal fantasies have been a weakness of mine. It goes without saying that the execution of “fan girl gets dumped into her Game of Thrones-like universe” worked perfectly for me.

Maggie goes to sleep in our world and wakes up in the fictional kingdom from her favourite unfinished fantasy series. And the best part? She actually knows this world. She knows the characters, the history, the politics, the dangers… or at least, she thinks she does.

Because obviously, things don't go exactly according to the books.

I loved that this wasn't just a case of “girl enters fantasy world and immediately becomes the chosen one.” Maggie's biggest advantage is that she's a reader. She knows the story, she knows what she's supposed to avoid, and she has just enough information to make things incredibly interesting.

Add political intrigue, magic, danger, questionable alliances and a world that feels very Game of Thrones, and I was completely sold.

It gave me that same feeling I love in Outlander: being dropped into a completely different world and having to figure out how the hell you're going to survive there.
